The move from colony to independent country in Latin America was somehow both unified and disjointed. Independence from Spain (and Portugal in Brazil) was a big deal that was shared by all revolutionaries, but the end goals differed from leader to leader. Each group sought its own form of governance, social structures, and laws.  This website will help layout the transition from colony to country and introduce key figures and events.

The Beginnings of a Movement page will discuss how the door was opened for independence movements in Latin America. The How Independence Spreads page will then go on to illustrate how revolutionary fervor spread through Latin America, how ideals were shared amongst different leaders, and where those ideals differed. If you’re interested in learning more about key figures, the Revolutionary Leaders page gives some background on a few. The page titled Brazil! will give you a look into how Brazil differs from its Spanish compatriots. Of course, to learn anymore about the works used for this site, just visit the Works Cited page.
